THE COMMODORE PERRY ESTATE

The Commodore Perry Estate, once a summer retreat on the northern fringes of the Texas capital, found a new purpose in the mid-20th century when it was gifted and transformed into a private school. When the school closed its doors in the early 2000s, our clients envisioned a revival of the estate as a member’s club and hotel, a sanctuary for the burgeoning Austin community. We embarked on a journey to design a strategy and program to embrace the ever-shifting landscape beneath the Texas sun.

Over the span of three years, we reimagined the property by first converting it into luxurious hotel suites. Then, collaborating with architects Moule & Polyzoides, a new Spanish Revival building took shape. Next, our vision extended to a farm-to-table restaurant that would be called Lutie’s, in honor of the original owners. Indeed, Lutie’s became the muse for what is now one of the city’s most cherished dining experiences.

Music, an integral part of the guest experience, guided many design choices. We enlisted the sonic expertise of Orchid Music Design, who provided melodies that would resonate with the rhythm of the day, seasons, and the unique essence of each space, both interior and exterior.

Every detail was meticulously considered: a capsule collection of staff uniforms, custom upholstery fabrics, wall coverings, and hand-painted murals. In-room amenities including toiletries, soaps, and robes were thoughtfully curated. We outfitted the food and beverage spaces with bespoke porcelain plates and enamelware for the pool area. We fully embraced every opportunity for visual delight.

In honoring the history of the estate and what will surely be a vibrant future, we captured the essence of our mission with a simple statement: “A Shared Intention is Reason Enough for Revelry.” In this way, the Commodore Perry Estate exists as a testament to keeping Austin a city of inclusion.
